When a group of 115 English refugees arrived on Roanoke Island off the coast of North Carolina in 1587, Colonial Governor John Waite chose to return to England to replenish supplies.
However, the advent of a big war in Europe stopped him from returning to the colony for three years, and when the conditions were right for him to return, he discovered that all traces of the colony and its inhabitants had vanished, and all that remained was a single large hill and a message.
